We have recently been doing some track repairs, replacing culverts after our very wet winter. So far this year we have had 1300 mm of rainfall, this makes 2011 the wettest we have farmed through, and one of the wettest years in the 120 years our family has farmed here.
The tracks which are used daily for taking cows to and from the milking shed need to be maintained. Poorly maintained tracks can lead to lameness in our cows. Fortunately our cows suffer very little lameness and we are keen to keep it that way. It’s a classic case of ‘prevention is better than a cure’.
Yep, if only I had shares in a quarry this year!
Lucky for us we have an on farm source of track material!
